Passing the practical test: 10 tips for Driving School Germany
1 min read · Updated on October 17, 2026
The practical test is when things get serious: you drive through the city with your instructor, and every mistake costs points. With these tips you’ll get through safely – maybe even with a 1.
How grading works
You may collect up to 15 fault points. When only 5 or 2 points are left, your instructor warns you. At the end you get a grade from 1 to 6 – and you can watch your test drive from above in your profile afterwards.
The 10 most important tips
Most points are always lost in the same places:
- Stick to the speed limit – especially in 30 km/h zones
- Stop sign means: stop completely, even if nobody is coming
- At a red light, stop before the stop line
- At junctions without signs, give way to the right
- Let pedestrians cross at zebra crossings
- Don’t drive into restricted areas
- Enter roundabouts carefully and follow the circle
- Follow the arrow – it always shows you the way
- Better a bit slower than too fast in bends
- Stay calm when your instructor warns you – one mistake doesn’t mean you fail
Practise first
Trainings like emergency braking, slalom, speed control and the reaction test make you more confident at the wheel. And if you don’t know all the signs yet, take the sign quiz first.
Failed? No problem
You immediately see how far you got and can try again straight away. Watch your drive in your profile – there you can see where you lost the points.
