Zipper merge: when and where to merge
1 min read · Updated on October 17, 2026
When a lane ends, traffic merges using the zipper method: alternately one car from each lane.
Vereinfachte Erklärung zum Lernen – keine Rechtsberatung. Verbindlich ist die Straßenverkehrs-Ordnung (StVO).
Where do you merge?
Only directly before the end of the lane – not far before. That uses the space better and shortens the traffic jam.
Stay fair
If you’re in the continuing lane, you let someone in alternately. Pushing in or deliberately closing gaps isn’t allowed.
