30 km/h zone: what applies here?
1 min read · Updated on October 17, 2026
You’ll find 30 km/h zones mainly in residential areas. They’re meant to protect residents and children.
Vereinfachte Erklärung zum Lernen – keine Rechtsberatung. Verbindlich ist die Straßenverkehrs-Ordnung (StVO).
The rules
The 30 km/h maximum applies to the whole zone – not just right after the sign. At junctions, right before left usually applies.
Where does the zone end?
Only at the “end of 30 km/h zone” sign. After that, whatever the next signs say applies again – in towns usually 50 km/h.
In the game
Driving School Germany has many kilometres of 30 km/h streets. They have their own colour on the map.
