Speed limits in Germany – in towns, outside towns, motorway
1 min read · Updated on October 17, 2026
Unless a sign says otherwise, fixed maximum speeds for cars apply in Germany.
Vereinfachte Erklärung zum Lernen – keine Rechtsberatung. Verbindlich ist die Straßenverkehrs-Ordnung (StVO).
The default values for cars
Without a sign:
- In towns: 50 km/h
- Outside towns: 100 km/h
- Motorway: no fixed limit, but a recommended 130 km/h
Signs take precedence
A speed limit sign overrides these values – up or down. 30 km/h zones and traffic-calmed areas have their own rules.
In the game
The Driving School Germany map shows every speed limit in the city in colour – from walking pace to motorway.
