Overtaking – when it’s allowed and when it isn’t
1 min read · Updated on October 17, 2026
Overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres in traffic. That’s why there are clear rules for it.
Vereinfachte Erklärung zum Lernen – keine Rechtsberatung. Verbindlich ist die Straßenverkehrs-Ordnung (StVO).
Basic rules
You overtake on the left. You need a clear view and enough space, and you must not endanger oncoming traffic.
Overtaking is forbidden here
For example:
- When the traffic situation is unclear
- At zebra crossings
- Where there’s a no-overtaking sign
- Across a solid line
Distance to cyclists
When overtaking cyclists, a minimum distance of 1.5 metres in towns and 2 metres outside towns applies.
