Supplementary signs: the small signs below the sign
1 min read · Updated on October 17, 2026
Supplementary signs are small white signs below a road sign. They restrict or extend the main sign.
Typical supplementary signs
For example:
- Times, such as “22–6 h” for a night-time speed limit
- Distances like “in 200 m”
- Length of a stretch
- Exceptions like “cyclists excepted”
- Electric vehicles while charging
Always read them together
A supplementary sign only applies to the sign directly above it. Only both together make the complete rule.
